Decorating your home can be a daunting task for homeowners. Figuring out unique ways to make your home stand out from a crowd can be an expensive task. However, there are several ways and means to use stuff around your house to counter the price of traditional decorations. Here are five examples of DIY that you could try to add that extra zing to your living space.
Bottle lamps
Every household has a bunch of empty bottles lying around. What to do with them? Get your creative juices flowing and use them to make bottle lamps. Depending on the kind of bottle you’re using, purchase some glass paint and let your artistry flow. You could choose to paint the bottle one color or in a variety of colors depending. Warm stringy fairy lights are the best way to construct your personalized bottle lamp. Put the lights in the bottle and put the bottle on a side table or in the corner. Watch it light up your room.
Make a herbarium
If you’re a plant buff, making a herbarium can be a long process although once it is complete, your effort will bear fruit. Pick a part of a plant, flower, or leaf. Use parchment paper and attach the greens to it. You can now choose to use either a wooden press or go the easier route and put the plants between two heavy books. Keep the plants pressed for at least 24 hours. Once the plants are dry on the paper, you can paint around them or leave it be. Put a wooden frame around this. It makes a beautiful wall decoration.
Vinyl wall
If you’re a music buff, vinyl will hold a special place in your heart. If you have a collection of old vinyl that isn’t usable in a player, re-purpose them into wall decorations. You could create a music-themed museum on your wall along with the vinyl cover or simply just affix the vinyl to the wall, creating an aesthetic musical aura in your living space or bedroom.
Cardboard flower pots
Very often, empty cardboard boxes are around the house with no purpose. Reusing them to make flower pots is a great idea. Cut up these boxes into even-sized squares. You can then use a strong adhesive to fit them together. Coat the insides with non-absorbent material. Add some soil and plant away. Be careful about the kind of plant you want to grow and place them around your house, by a window, or on a side table. Certain plants require pruning, so ensure you’re up to the task before planting them.
Kintsugi
Kintsugi is a Japanese art form wherein broken glass, ceramic or earthen containers are fixed, putting the pieces together with lacquer and an adhesive that is powdered or mixed with gold, silver, or platinum dust. The idea behind this is to treat the breakage as part of the story of the object. Look for ceramic bowls, bottles, vases, or glasses around the house and use these items to make your kintsugi creation.
